Nigerian Senate Speaker Bukola Saraki said on Thursday he is running for President of Nigeria.
This happened about 24 hours after his colleague, Rabiu Kwankwaso, also reported to the same office at a complex rally in downtown Abuja.
Messrs. Saraki and Kwankwaso are among the candidates for the presidency of the main opposition party, the PDP.
Mr. Saraki made his statement during a public dialogue organized by the #NotTooYoungToRun movement, a group of young people who would like to adopt a new law that would reduce the age of political qualification throughout the country.
The event, titled "Youth Candidacy and the Future of Nigeria Beyond 2019," is a series of political commitment to expand the political participation of young Nigerians ahead of next February's elections.
The leaders of the Democratic People's Party (PDP) were invited to the series on Thursday, with Saraki being invited to deliver the speech.
"Your generation does not live in the world of poverty," said Saraki to a cheerful audience.
He promised to lead the fight against poverty and poverty.
"I am determined to lift Nigeria out of poverty." We will stimulate the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
But the shocking aspect of the appearance appeared when the Senate Speaker declared his intention to run for president.
"I decided to answer the call of the teeming youth who asked me to run for the presidency," he said.
"Accordingly, I hereby announce my intention to stand for election as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the next general election of 2019 on the Platform of the Democratic People's Party (PDP).
"I do it with the firm belief that Nigeria and Nigerians."
According to rumors, Saraki was the potential aspirant of 2019 for several weeks, making Thursday's declaration more ceremonial than remarkable.
