Over 30 Migrants Dead, 200 Rescued Off Libyan Coast Today

More than 30 migrants died and 200 were rescued on Saturday after their boats foundered off Libya's western coast, the Libyan navy said.

The coastguard conducted two rescue operations off the city of Garabulli, 60 kilometres (40 miles) east of Tripoli, spokesman Colonel Abu Ajila Abdelbarri said.

He added that patrols had found 31 bodies and 60 survivors from one boat, while all 140 passengers had survived in a second boat.

Undergraduate Commits Suicide In Bauchi

A 300-level student of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, on Friday morning reportedly hanged himself.

The deceased, Dahiru Adamu, 30, was said to be a student of the Department of Technology Education at the institution. He was found hanging from a tree.

The incident was said to have occurred at the Gubi campus of the school along Kano Road.

A student of the institution, who spoke on a condition of anonymity, told Saturday Punch that the body of the victim was left hanging from the tree for about two hours before it was brought down.


He said, “I got to school on Friday morning only to find out that a student had hanged himself in the compound.

According to The South China Morning Post (SCMP), Communist Party of China (CPC) officials visited Chritian believers’ homes in Yugan county of Jiangxi province where about 10 percent of the population are Christians. They urged residents to replace personal religious displays with posters of President Xi Jinping; more than 600 removed Christian symbols from their living rooms, and 453 hung portraits of the Communist leader, according to SCMP.

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, has said that the party is yet to endorse President Muhammadu Buhari as its sole candidate for the 2019 presidential election.

Many Osun State pensioners on Wednesday took to the streets to protest non payment of their pensions for 13 and-a-half months after a headmaster killed himself over unpaid gratuity.
 
The pensioners operating on the platform of 2011/2012 Forum of Retired Public Servants in Osun State accused the government of Rauf Aregbesola of trying to starve them to death.
 
According to Punch, the protesters were armed with placards with various inscriptions as they took off from Ayetoro Junction and marched to the popular Olaiya Junction where they addressed journalists.

Students at the University of Zimbabwe on Monday skipped their semester final exams, demanding that vice-chancellor Levi Nyagura revoke the PhD controversially awarded to now ex-First Lady Grace Mugabe in 2014, or that he step down with immediate effect.
 
The students also said they would not write exams unless President Robert Mugabe leaves office.
 
UniZim was forced to stop the exams after the students vowed they would not step into exam halls unless their issues had been addressed.

14-Year-Old Sentenced To Prison For Dumping Refuse On The Streets Of Osun

A 14-year old boy, Mutiu, and 29 others were yesterday sentenced to one month’s imprisonment by an Osogbo Magistrate’s Court for dumping refuse on the streets of Osogbo, the Osun State capital.

The convicts were arrested on Tuesday at different areas by officials of the Osun State Waste Management Agency and were brought to the court dressed in boxer shots, while  most of the females among them were dressed in nightgowns and wrappers only.

Among those who were convicted are Fakunle Ibikunle, 19; Azeez Opeyemi, 17;  Shittu Dorcas, 30; Adepeju Adesina, 23; Paulina Ona, 27; Damilola Juwonlola, 34; Ayeni Ridwane, 22; and Funmilola Kasali, 25.

It has been revealed that some Kenyan robbers spent months building a tunnel into the bowels of a bank located opposite a police station and stole equivalent of half a million dollars, police said on Tuesday.
 
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Police said they had arrested two men and one woman over the robbery but had not recovered the 50 million Kenyan shillings, reported missing by staff at the branch of Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) on Monday when they showed up to work.
 
“We have not recovered the stolen money,” said Simba Willy, sub-county police commander in the town of Thika, northeast of Nairobi, where the heist took place.

Dangote To Open $500m Cement Plant In Congo

Dangote Cement will formally open its 1.5million metric tonnes Cement Plant in Congo on Thursday.
 
The plant, built at a cost of $500 million, is expected to directly employ more than 1000 people, and thousands more in indirect job placement.
 
The Plant which is now the largest in Congo rolled out its first bag of cement on the 7th of August, 2017.
 
Dangote Cement plants currently feature in 17 African countries. The Congo Plant commissioning will bring the total of Dangote Cement fully operational Plants in Africa, to 10.
 
The company’s third quarter unaudited results showed that the Congo plant which recently began operations has almost doubled the size of the cement sector in the country.

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has obtained CCTV footage showing the last moments of Bilyaminu Bello, the son of a former Peoples Democratic Party chairman who was allegedly killed by his wife, Maryam Sanda.
 
A Punch correspondent had reported that Bello was stabbed to death by his wife over allegations of infidelity after she read a text message on his phone.
 
It was learnt that Bello was rejected by two hospitals before he was finally pronounced dead. An impeccable police source said the police recovered the CCTV footage of their residence.
 
“We have been able to obtain the footage and it shows the suspect and three private security guards conveying him unto a vehicle from where he was rushed to a hospital,” he said.

Following the interim take over of Zimbabwe government by military arm, the country’s ruling party Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front (ZANU -PF) on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 has announced that there was no coup in the country, only that President Robert Mugabe and his wife, have been detained and that the president has been replaced with Emmerson Mnagngawa, the vice president who was sacked a week ago and exiled by Mugabe.
They wrote on Twitter an hour ago, “Zimbabwe has not had a coup. There has been a decision to intervene because our constitution had been undermined, in the interim Comrade E Mnagngawa will be president of ZANU PF as per the constitution of our revolutionary organisation.
In a series of tweets, the ruling party went on to indicate that the action of the military has the backing of politicians in the country.

Recall in a 1980 interview that Mugabe granted to BBC shortly after he took power, he boosted that no military can remove him as he intends to rule the country with firmness.

Donald Trump deserves the death penalty for insulting North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the country's state media has said.
An editorial in the ruling party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, called the US President a "hideous criminal" for urging the five Asian countries he visited last week to maximise pressure on North Korea to halt its growing nuclear programme.
The paper also called Mr Trump a "coward" for cancelling a visit to the inter-Korean border.
"The worst crime for which he can never be pardoned is that he dared [to] malignantly hurt the dignity of the supreme leadership," the editorial said.

A 24-year-old man identified as Samuel Ogbonna, is among 150 Nigerians studying in the United Kingdom on scholarships, who may be forced to return home before Christmas because their funding has been stopped by their sponsors.
 
A British newspaper, The Sunday Telegraph, first brought the plight of these students to the knowledge of the public in a publication that recently caused a stir in the education sector in Nigeria.
 
According to Punch Metro, Ogbonna, in an online interview, painted a disturbing picture of the condition in which he and his fellow compatriots have found themselves in the UK.
 
Saddled with debts of up to £20,000 each, most of them, especially those who completed their courses last academic session, have been informed by their respective universities that they will not receive their degree certification.

Biafra: Keyamo Mocks IPOB over Nnamdi Kanu's Sack

Human rights activist and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Festus Keyamo has taunted the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, over its announcement that it had sacked Nnamdi Kanu as director of Radio Biafra.
 
Keyamo wondered why IPOB, who had alleged that Kanu was killed by Nigerian army, was still announcing his removal ‘in the grave’.
 
It was reported that Radio Biafra upon resumption on Monday announced through one Ifeoma Okorafor that the radio was restructuring.
 
She announced that, “Mazi Nnamdi Nwanekaenyi Kanu, the former Director of Radio Biafra is hereby dismissed and removed as Director of Radio Biafra following extensive and intensive consultations”

While speaking  to journalists after he was paraded alongside two other alleged partners, the suspected killer of a 17-year-old girl whose body parts were reportedly severed for money rituals, on Monday confessed that he was contracted to do the job for N8,000.
 
According to Premium Times, the suspect identified as Yewunu Tanlaju, who made the shocking disclosure at the police headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, said he lured the girl, who was hawking snacks into a hideout at Arigo Ijofin located in Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State and murdered her.

There were rumours of bomb scare at the Anambra headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, following alleged discovery of a substance which looked like an improvised explosive device (IED).
 
A source who pleaded not to be named told DAILY POST that the device was detected by men of the anti-bomb squad of the Nigeria Police Force who combed the entire compound very early on Monday morning.
