Senator Dino Melaye was indicted on Wednesday at a FCT High Court in Apo on six charges, on the verge of attempted suicide, attempted escape and damage to property of the police.
Melaye, who represents the senatorial area of Kogi West, has denied committing the offenses, while Judge Silvanus Oriji has granted him a bail of 5 million naira
Oriji also ordered him to produce two similar securities as part of the bail.
The judge ordered that the sureties be directors in the public service, reside in the FCT and file affidavits of means.
The prosecutor, Dr. Alex Izinyon (SAN), told the court that the defendant had committed the alleged offenses on April 24.
He stated that the accused, while in a police vehicle bound for Lokoja, forced himself out and escaped.
Izinyon further stated that the accused was sitting on the ground, holding a substance in one hand while threatening to drink it to commit suicide in order to put the police at risk.
The prosecutor also said that the accused had broken the window of the vehicle with his elbow and caused damage to the property of the police.
He stated that the offenses were contrary to the provisions of articles 148, 153, 183, 313, 326 and 327 of the Penal Code.
Counsel for the accused, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), had requested the court to authorize the continuation of the bail given to the accused at the Wuse District Court.
The prosecution opposed the request, adding that bail is at the discretion of the court.
The judge confirmed the prosecution's submission and gave the new conditions for bail.
He stated that the case would be assigned to another judge by the Chief Justice after the holidays.
