Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, an award-winning Nigerian writer, received an honorary degree from the prestigious Duke University of Durham, North Carolina.

She was among the few recipients of the university's honorary degree and they have all been described as "people who make changes in the world in a very broad way".

Duke University President Vincent E. Price confirmed in March that the author "Americanah" was on the list of recipients. Adichie received the award alongside General Motors President Marry Bara, Phil Freelon, principal architect of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Other recipients were: William Bell, former Mayor of Durham, William Kaelin, Professor of Medicine at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Russell M. Robinson II, Lawyer, Community Leader and Philanthropist.
