The Borno State Chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) condemned the detention of a lawyer, Mr. Sadiq Kachalla, by the police in Maiduguri.
The president of the association, Mr. Muhammad Maigana, described the detention of one of its members as "unconstitutional, illegal and illegal".
Maigana revealed that the lawyer had gone to the GRA police station in the Maiduguri metropolitan area on Friday to secure the release of his client in custody, but was arrested.
According to NAN, Maigana claimed that the lawyer was arrested on the orders of DPO Bulama Usaini for more than 13 hours for engaging the police in a heated debate.
The president added that the police refused to grant bail to the arrested lawyer despite requests from the association.
"The NBA condemns and hates the practice or action of Mr. Usaini; the data protection officer of the GRA police station for locking Sadiq Muhammad Kachalla into his cell for about 13 hours.
"The lawyers plead in favor of the evidence; The sad thing is that he went to the police station to exercise his fundamental rights as a consecration in the constitution, but he found himself in his cell.
"The action contravened Chapter 4, Articles 35 and 36 of the constitution.
"The section has taken steps so that on Monday we would not go to court, but we will go to the police commissioner to present his complaints.
"Of course, we bring the case to the court of law and anyone who initiates the action must be treated according to the law," said Maigana.
When NAN made contact, Mr. Edet Okon, Public Relations Officer of the Command Police, said he was not aware of the case, adding that he would contact the relevant division on this matter.
