The leader of the indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, told the Federal Supreme Court in Abuja on Thursday (October 31st) that he was prepared to stand trial if the court guaranteed his safety.
Kanu told the presiding judge, Judge Binta Nyako, through his lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, that the request for the return of the head of IPOB's bail to face his trial had been filed. the 1st of April.
"We have a bail application filed on April 1, 2019, the application was submitted to the prosecution and was torn up for your hearing. We urge the court to re-establish ties because it will guarantee her safety when she returns home to continue her trial, "he said.
For his part, the federal government lawyer, Labaran Shuaibu, told the court that he was only following the procedure in place of the application. Shuaibu urged the court to postpone the case to allow them to present the necessary processes.
In rendering his decision, Judge Nyako, who postponed the case to 16 January, stated that the only way to guarantee Kanu's safety was to keep him in prison. She said that even judges are no longer safe in the country.
"Even the judges are kidnapped in the country. Prison is the only safe place for him, "he said.
Judge Nyako ordered the arrest of the head of the IPOB, Kanu. The judge made the order in a decision after canceling the bond given to Kanu. He explained that the court had made the order because Kanu did not appear in court after being released on bail in April 2017.
The judge also ordered that the trial be continued in the absence of the IPOB leader and that an arrest warrant be issued against him. On April 25, 2017, Judge Nyako granted Kanu's bail for health reasons and asked him to submit three guarantees, one of which was to be a deputy senator, a Jewish religious leader, and a highly respected person who was to : Owning a property in Abuja.
The judge warned the leader of the IPOB not to give interviews to the press, make demonstrations or attend a meeting of more than 10 people while he was on bail. She had also warned him that the bond would be revoked if he did not meet any of the conditions.
