This is not how Cristiano Ronaldo envisaged the EURO 2016 final going.
Portugal’s captain and talisman injured his left knee early on and had to come off less than 25 minutes into the final against France.
Utterly devastated, Ronaldo sobbed as he realized his dream of being the hero for Portugal was over.
Dimitri Payet‘s tackle injured Ronaldo, as his right thigh slammed into Ronaldo’s left knee. It was a powerful challenge and he knew exactly what he was doing but referee Mark Clattenburg didn’t even award a free kick.
Ronaldo, 31, tried to come back on twice after getting treatment and having his knee strapped up, but it was to no avail as the three-time Ballon d’Or winner was carried off the pitch.
The Real Madrid superstar has been the talisman for Portugal for over a decade and now the biggest game of his career was over in the first half.
He was given a standing ovation as he was stretchered off the pitch but Portugal’s chances of winning EURO 2016 and its first-ever major title were dealt a huge blow.
